Recent Major Changes to Application Manager

Recent Major Changes to Application ManagerRecent Major Changes to Application ManagerRecent Major Changes to Application ManagerAs you know, it is nearly impossible to apply for a federal job without using both USAJOBS.gov and ApplicationManager.gov. Application Manager is the most used tool for application questionnaires.Over the past few weeks, Application Manager has quietly undergone some major changes that will affect how you use the system. The site has no dedicated News or Updates page, but they are issuing this standard email via their help deskApplication Manager has been enhanced to improve the application process and will provide the following benefits. Standardizes the application process by directing applicants through their USAJOBS account when applyingEliminates the need for a separate account in Application ManagerProvides a standardized method and centralized location for applicants to verify their status and documents submitted through their USAJOBS account. What d oes this mean for you and/or your clients? You no longer need (or are able to use) a separate username/password for Application Manager. You now only need one username/password to access both USAJOBS and Application Manager. The downside is that you can no longer access Application Manager directly. You must go through USAJOBS.If you close Application Manager in the middle of applying for a job, you will have to sign back in to USAJOBS to access that questionnaire. Then go to My Account Main Page. Select Application Status. Scroll down and click on the job title of the job you were applying to. Then select Update Application on the job announcement. You will be asked to reselect the correct resume and supporting documents. Then you will be forwarded to Application Manager and asked to click Accept and Proceed the terms. You will then find your questionnaire and application. You can no longer track applications using Application Manager directly. The Main page on Application Manager is gone.Application Manager is still tracking applications, but applicants must first sign in to USAJobs. Then view My Account Main Page, select Application Status and click mora Information next to the job to which you applied. You will then be forwarded to Application Manager.Final TipThis change isnt mentioned on any official websites, but we have noted that some questionnaire questions are no longer followed by a red * (required field) asterisk. That means applicants might mistakenly submit applications without filling out the entire questionnaire.Just a reminder, every question on the questionnaire is a required question- even if a red asterisk does not follow it.You can be in touch with Application Manager directly through their Help Desk email address ApplicationManagerHelpDeskopm.govAs always, we are staying on top of changes as they occur Soon, we will be updating our Jobseekers Guide with these changes and more. Let us know if you see any other changes to the federal applica tion process that we should be aware ofThanksKathryn

Selling Yourself in the Job Search

Selling Yourself in the Job SearchSelling Yourself in the Job SearchWhat?? This eclectic, accomplished professional immediately lumps himself along with thousands of others by picking one of the most generic things on his resume. The MBA welches from a good school, yes. It was an interesting counterpart to his otherwise very technical background, check. So it deserves to be mentioned, sure. But elend first Its still much more plain vanilla than any of the other things he also had.So, rule 1 for your pitch is to lead with the memorable. As a recruiter, Ive interviewed tons of MBAs (this guy wanted a financial services career, so no shortage of MBAs there). But, I can count the number of successful entrepreneurs and/ or fashion models. Are you a black belt in karate, a former prima ballerina, fluent in multiple languages? Dont be afraid to be unique.Im not suggesting to not mention the MBA at all. Its a key part of his added value because he has the finance and technology combination. But its the combination thats so interesting. So, rule 2 is to frame your qualities so that they build on each other. Absolutely mention the different degrees youve completed, industries where youve worked, and functional roles that youve held. But weave them into a coherent plot line so that each adds a welcome dimension, not just another factoid for me to remember. So you started and sold a tech company and have an MBA from Top School X interesting kofferverstrkerResults still matter. The wine stood out because it was Paris, the modeling was significant because he had worked at a top level, and the entrepreneurship added value because of his successful exit. (The MBA also fits in nicely because its from a top school.) You cant just mention every interesting thing you do, like fluency in Pig Latin, if there is no business context. When I listed out black belt, prima ballerina or language fluency as possible unique items, these are all levels of mastery. So, rule 3 is to pick the qualities that have substantive results to back them up. You want to intrigue but also amaze.Your pitch is how you introduce yourself at networking events, informational interviews, on your cover letter, to your friends friends. It is how you answer that interview staple, Tell me about yourself. It defines your brand and therefore drives your search. The pitch is critical to positioning yourself for the right role at the right level. Be memorable. Build on your strengths. Lead with results.Posted by Caroline Ceniza-Levine

What to Do When Your Manager Hints That You Should Quit

What to Do When Your Manager Hints That You Should Quit What to Do When Your Manager Hints That You Should Quit At some point in your career, you’ll question whether you’re on the right path. This reflection is good, but when your boss begins questioning that, it’s time to take a serious look at what you’re doing and why. If your boss makes a suggestion that you may want to look for another job, there are a few steps you can take. In the end, it can be a positive experience that leads you to a happier and more fulfilling position . Step 1: Assess What You Really Want The first thing to do in this case is to step back and consider what direction you want to go in your career with this company. In a 2016 survey , 31 percent of respondents reported fear of unemployment and financial loss as their top concern. As such, hanging on to a job they (or you) no longer love is an easy way to avoid this potentially life-changing issue. This is when it’s time to get real with yourself. Career coach and success strategist, Carlota Zimmerman , JD., says: “You should be honest with yourself: do you really want this job? It’s hard enough to fight for what we want in this life; it’s immeasurably more difficult to fight for something that no longer speaks to us.” If your answer is no, I don’t, it’s time to start looking and move to step number three. If you do, take it to step number two. Step 2: Meet and Discuss Next Steps You know that you want to stay with the company, so schedule a time to meet with your manager and discuss how you can move forward. This is a good time to talk about what issues the management team sees, where they feel you fit best within the company and what you’d like to do- Do you want to move laterally into a new position? Do you want to prepare yourself for a promotion? “No one cares more about your career than you do, so take proactive steps to work with the manager to either improve in the existing position or develop a transition strategy, ” explains Amanda Haddaway, Managing Director of HR Answerbox . Within that meeting, you need to share not only what you want moving forward, but also how you plan to address the original issue. “Admit to your mistakes, and provide a specific plan to show how you will improve. This shows responsibility, dedication, and work ethic. Follow up your conversation with an emailed recap. That way, your boss has a record of your commitment and can help to hold you accountable,” says Amy Cooper Hakim, Ph. D., the founder of The Cooper Strategic Group . What if you decide that you really don’t want to be in this job anymore? “If you’re an employee and you know you’ve checked out at your job, your options are to ride it out or face the truth,” says Robby Slaughter, principal with AccelaWork . Slaughter suggests that riding it out could ultimately affect your career overall, making it a poor choice in the long term. This is where your transition plan comes into play. The first step: stop slacking at work. If you want a good recommendation for interviews, it’s important to avoid burning any bridges or acting like you don’t care. Next come the details. While applying and interviewing, consider the best way to handle transitions within your current position: When you leave the company on good terms and show your manager respect, you’re more likely to reap the benefits later. Hearing that your manager isn’t happy with your performance is never easy- in fact, it can be really hard to take. If you’re honest with yourself, though, you may find that you don’t want to be in the position anymore and this was a wake-up call for you to assess and move on or move forward within the company. Either way, you’ll likely be happier in the end, and that’s the most important thing.

This is the most powerful way to make your life fantastic

This is the most powerful way to make your life fantastic This is the most powerful way to make your life fantastic Last year Cal Newport convinced 1,600 people to completely change their lives. He asked them to take a 30-day break from the optional technologies in their lives. Unless not using it would get you fired, divorced, or cause the people you love to spontaneously burst into flame, it was out. Say goodbye to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for a month. And anything not optional got rules: only checking email at designated hours and the screen time limits you might impose on your kids now got imposed on  you. So what happened? No, nobody had a seizure. And, yes, the initial transition was rough for many. But after that, in the vast majority of cases, it utterly changed people’s lives for the better. They got happier. More productive. They spent more quality time with their kids. One father remarked how weird it was to be the only parent at the playground  notlooking at his phone.Research shows 70% of your happiness comes from  relationships:Contrary to the belief that happiness is hard to ex plain, or that it depends on having great wealth, researchers have identified the core factors in a happy life. The primary components are number of friends, closeness of friends, closeness of family, and relationships with co-workers and neighbors. Together  these features explain about 70 percent of personal happiness. â€" Murray and Peacock 1996And what’s the biggest controllable factor that’s taking quality time away from your relationships? Probably your phone. The internet. The pseudo-relationships you have on social media. We’ve read a thousand tips and tricks for reducing our screen time but they’re like fad diets and are generally only effective until the next time you feel a buzzing in your pocket.Technology’s not evil, but we need to find a balance. We need more than tips, we need a philosophy. A system. Dare I say, an  ethos.  And Cal has one for us: “Digital Minimalism.”No, Cal’s not going to tell you to smash your phone. Quite the opposite: He’s a prof essor of Computer Science at Georgetown University, sporting a PhD from MIT.  The Force is strong with this one.  He’s the bestselling author of a whole bunch of books, including the amazing  Deep Work. His latest book is  Digital Minimalism: Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World.  I gave Cal a call to find out how we can get the best of technology - so it doesn’t get the best of us. This isn’t another rant about the evils of screens. It’s a battle plan for building a better life.Let’s get to it …The true enemy is “reverse FOMO”FOMO: fear of missing out. You’ve probably clicked an article about the subject because, hey, wouldn’t wanna miss out on the latest internet hysteria. But FOMO is a false god. It’s not the real problem. The real problem is “reverse FOMO.” You’re not missing out on anything online. But by always being online you’re missing out on life. Here’s Cal:We have this idea of FOMO, which is that if you’re not super-connected, there c ould be something you’re missing out on. But the reality is that the issue most people are having is that because they’re using technology more than they know is healthy, it’s crowding out all the things that we know deep down make a good life good. People are missing out on real-world conversation, which is just crucial for a satisfying life. Being with people in person, sacrificing time and effort to actually be with someone, to connect with them through the good, the bad, the boring, the interesting. We need that to survive. The ability to lift your phone at any moment is slicing good hours into time confetti. It’s preventing us from accomplishing big things and focusing on the people we love. And at the same time it’s creating a salad bar of new problems like anxiety, FOMO and loneliness. Sorry, your brain needs more social connection than Facebook Likes can provide. Here’s Cal:…we’re seeing this increasingly strong signal that more social media use means higher l ikelihood of loneliness. And one of the leading hypotheses is that social media displaces real-world interaction. If you’re on social media all the time, you feel like you’re very social, and therefore you don’t invest the effort required to do as much real-world interaction. Our brains evolved for millions of years with no like buttons or emojis. When you say, “Okay, I’m not going to give you any face to face interaction, but what I am going to give you is a little number that counts how many hearts someone clicks on a picture” - that’s not satisfying it. That’s why you can ironically end up more lonely when you spend more time on social media platforms. It’s something we should be much more afraid of than we are.Too much phone time isn’t just distracting us from our relationships - research shows it’s making us  worse  at conducting them. Here’s Cal:Sherry Turkle from MIT documents that conversation actually requires practice. There’s a dance involved i n sitting across from someone and negotiating that interaction. And if you rob a lot of that from your life, you get bad at it. It not only makes you lonely, it not only brings out anxiety-related disorders, it makes you really bad at relating when you have to do it.People will respond “But social media is good for X and Y. I  do  get value from it!” No doubt. But that logic is a trap. Plenty of things have  some  value - the question is what are you giving up in exchange for it?You have 24 hours in a day. If you’re doing one thing, you’re not doing another. Is the value you get from epic hours online better than the value you’d get from the alternative? Better than quality time with friends? We need to be more conscious of the choices we’re making. When a friend convinces you to download yet another app, they may say  â€œyou don’t know what you’re missing.” But when it comes to real life, we  do  know what we’re missing. And often it’s far more valuable than w hatever another dinging notification brings.(To learn more about how you and your children can lead a successful life, check out my bestselling book  here.)So what do we do about it?Forget lifehacks - Start with valuesTech’s not good. Tech’s not evil. Tech’s a tool. You can use it for good or for  let’s-be-honest-checking-email-300-times-a-day-is-not-very-good.You never sat down and decided that your default should be you’ll stare at your phone every time you have a free second. But somehow it became the rule anyway. And that’s the problem. We didn’t make a decision. And that has led to epic amounts of asking, “Where the heck did all my time go?”We don’t need a lifehack. We need to start with values to make sure that technology serves us instead of us serving it. A hammer is a tool. But you wouldn’t default to picking it up every time you had a free moment. That would be silly. You’d grab it for a purpose that served your goals. But things get screwed up when you don’t know what your values and goals are. Here’s Cal:What matters is your whole picture for your life. You’re trying to build a good life that focuses on the things that are important to you, and technology is only useful in so much as it helps support the things you really care about. What this means is that you’re going to be very intentional. “Here’s what I really value. I’m going to focus my energy on these things, and I’m going to ignore and miss out on everything else.” That intentionality itself can be way more satisfying and positive than the benefits you get from all of those minor conveniences and minor dollops of value. You’re figuring out what’s important to your life. For each of these things, you’re stepping back and saying, “What’s the best way to use technology, if at all, to support this value?” and then you ignore everything else.If your career is everything to you and you’re in sales, hey, maybe you need to check email 300 time s a day. No problem - that’s in service of your values. But that’s not the case for most of us.You need to ask yourself what’s important to you. And then make a decision about how technology fits into your life to serve those goals. Be intentional abut setting rules that serve your purpose. Here’s Cal:How many people just made a New Year’s resolution to look at their phone less? That doesn’t do it. How many people have read the same article again and again about turning off their notifications? That’s the equivalent of telling people, “Vegetables are good for you. Try to eat less and move more.” It’s not enough. People need a philosophy based on their values so we don’t have to think about it. Digital Minimalism is one such philosophy. It’s like the veganism or the paleo of the digital world.“Paleo for your screen” has a nice ring to it. But that might be too extreme for most of us.But you need to know your values and priorities. And then set rules that work for them. Because as we’ve all seen, if we don’t start with values tech time will fill every void by default and you’ll end up wondering where the hours went. You may also end up wondering where you friends and family went too.(To learn how to stop checking your phone, click  here.)I know what a lot of people are thinking: “Um, other than vague platitudes about putting those I love first, what  are  my values?” And that leads us to another problem with tech. To address this one, we actually need to start by  getting away  from people. In fact, we need to get away from everything for a little while …Try a long walk without a phoneA long time ago in a galaxy far, far away people used to do this thing called “thinking.” They didn’t listen to anything, read anything, or talk to anyone for a little while. You can look this “thinking” thing up on Wikipedia and it probably has a picture of a horse and buggy next to it.These days I think many of us are scared to dea th of being alone with our own minds. This wasn’t always the way. And it’s not good. Here’s Cal:A smartphone made it possible for the first time in human history to eliminate all moments of solitude and deep thought from your day because it provides an endless stream of compelling stimuli. If you want to take in ideas and process them into something valuable, this requires a lot of thinking, and this thinking has to be done free from other stimuli. So if you want to take the great ideas from that new Eric Barker article and integrate them into your life into a way that’s really useful, you can’t just read the article. You also are going to have to spend some time thinking about what you read and place it within the structures that already exist in your life. You have to have time alone with your thoughts to extract anywhere near the full possible value from information. We need to do less  reacting  and more  reflecting. Back to Professor Cal:Having insight about your value s, your life, changes in your life, what you want to do, how you want to live, these key bits of self-reflection that help us grow as human beings absolutely depend on solitude. There has to be time where it’s you alone with your thoughts. So go out and take a long walk, sans phone, and try this “thinking” thing. Reading and listening to good ideas is awesome - trust me, I’m a big fan. But we also need time alone to  create  good ideas. We need to think about what is important to us. When we have the answer to that, many other decisions become much much easier.(To learn the 4-step morning ritual that will make you happy all day, click  here.)So you’re taking time to think. You know what’s important to you. But now you’re going to face the same problem the 1600 people in Cal’s experiment did:“What the heck do I do with myself now that I’m not online all the time?”“High-quality analog leisure”Archaeologists have discovered that back in that Dark Ages when peop le did that “thinking” thing,  they also engaged in these odd rituals called “hobbies.” These were projects where they gained skills and created things without incentives from an employer. How quaint. Here’s Cal, who explains things with 90% less snark:Historically, especially in the 19th century or the 20th century, as people had more leisure time, the natural discomfort with boredom drove them to try to fill it with quality activities or community engagement, high-skilled hobbies, intellectual pursuits that are done for non-professional reasons, like poetry and novels and big idea thinking. And we were always driven towards this.We all have activities we’re passionate about. Things we’d like to do that make us feel proud of ourselves. Things we’d like to be respected for. We look at people who teach themselves to play the guitar or learn another language and say, “Where do they find the time?”But we all have the same 24 hours. Really. (It has to do with physic s or something.) I laugh when I see articles on the net about, “How To Read More Books.” They get a lot of clicks. And people often ask me, “Eric, you read a lot. How can I read more?” But I won’t be posting on the subject anytime soon.  Actually, I will. Here you go: “The things that are not reading, do them less. The things that are reading, do them more. The End.”We all have 24 hours. It’s about priorities. And many of us are making our phones and social media a big priority - whether we admit it to ourselves or not.One of the most common things Cal heard from the 1600 was, “I forgot just how much I enjoyed doing X.” We should all do more X. And some Y. Forget Z, it sucks. We blast our free hours into time confetti and then can’t conceive of how people take on big personal projects or learn new skills. What hobby might bring you more joy or pride?Seriously, answer that question - because if you don’t know the answer, your efforts to curb your tech use will inevitably fail. You must have something to fill the void. And it has to excite you more than Instagram.(To learn the 4 harsh truths that will make you a better person, click  here.)So other than your new stamp-collecting hobby, what else do you need to do? Hint: it involves people…Make awesome plans with friendsSocial media is the empty calories of friend nutrition. Keep stuffing your face with digital Doritos and you won’t have time for a real meal.Think the world will end if you don’t comment on your friend’s next Facebook selfie? It won’t if you go visit them in person. Here’s that Cal guy again:Digital minimalists are way more invested in real-world conversation. Maybe they don’t comment on that baby picture, but they show up unsolicited with dinner so you don’t have to cook that night. They call you. And it’s a priority for them. “I want to talk to you. What’s going on? How’s X, Y, Z happening with your work?” And so their friendships end up becoming much stronger. This is what he saw with the 1600. (I encourage you all to emulate them - and bring me dinner.)Do your best not to  socialize digitally anymore if you can help it. Don’t use texting to catch up - use it for logistics to arrange a get together. Prioritize quality over quantity. Less texting, more hugging.  Hugs make you happy. Science says so. Mom says so. Scientific moms say so.But the big thing we’re missing these days is activities. People used to do things. Yeah, coffee or a drink is nice, but we need events, celebrations and competitions. Poker nights, board games, pickup basketball. We need to be a part of something and have a medium in which to connect, cooperate and express ourselves.  Here’s Señor Newport:So this is one of the benefits you get from high-quality leisure activities that have a social component to them, such as playing a board game with a group of friends or Ultimate Frisbee with your team. Part of why these types of things seem to be re ally beneficial is that the structure of the activity allows you a lot more flexibility and enjoyment in your social interaction that you might have in a simple conversation.Play Monopoly. Plan an outing. Go conquer a neighboring village.(To learn how to have a long awesome life, click  here.)Okay, we’ve learned a lot about what we’ve been missing. Let’s round it all up and see just how essential being part of a real-life community is to every one of us …Sum upThis is the most powerful way to make your life fantastic: Reverse FOMO is the problem: You’re not missing anything online. But if you’re always online you’re missing a lot of what makes life great. You Don’t Need Lifehacks, You Need Values: If you don’t know what’s more important to you than spending time on Instagram, you will keep spending all your time on Instagram. Long Walks Without A Phone: Thinking. Give it a try. I promise you, it’s not something you want someone else to do for you. High Quality Analog Leisure: Make something, learn something, practice something. We all have 24 hours in a day. Someone else is not doing cooler things than you because they have “more time”. It’s because they have different priorities. Make Awesome Plans With Friends: Which village should we conquer first? It’s about feeling good about yourself. Living a life in alignment with your deepest values. Accomplishing things you’re proud of. And, most of all, being engaged with a community of people who love and support you.I like technology. So do you. Nobody’s saying we have to surrender our phones and smash our routers. The issue is, by not having rules around how much we use it, we’ve quietly sacrificed some things that are vital. We can’t let digital connection get in the way of real community. That’s what we should be afraid of missing out on. It’s more important than any buzzing in our pocket - and if we take the time to really think about what makes us truly happy, we’ll choose community over modern conveniences almost every time.I’m not trying to be all sappy and poetic. We have evidence. By the end of the nineteenth century, cities in America were rapidly moving toward what would become the modern world. New technologies, more convenience - but less community. How ever, among the Native American tribes, not much was changing. Largely egalitarian and ruled by consensus, they lived much the same as they had for thousands of years. Not much new technology, but no shortage of community. Here’s what’s interesting: city-dwellers sometimes left to join the Native American tribes. But the reverse almost never occurred. From  Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging:It may say something about human nature that a surprising number of Americans- mostly men- wound up joining Indian society rather than staying in their own. They emulated Indians, married them, were adopted by them, and on some occasions even fought alongside them. And the opposite almost never happened: Indians almost never ran away to join white society. Emigration always seemed to go from the civilized to the tribal, and it left Western thinkers flummoxed about how to explain such an apparent rejection of their society.Actually, it even gets more extreme than that. From  Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging:“When an Indian child has been brought up among us, taught our language and habituated to our customs,” Benjamin Franklin wrote to a friend in 1753, “[yet] if he goes to see his relations and make one Indian ramble with them, there is no persuading him ever to return.” On the other hand, Franklin continued, white captives who were liberated from the Indians were almost impossible to keep at home: “Tho’ ransomed by their friends, and treated with all imaginable tenderness to prevail with them to stay among the English, yet in a short time they become disgusted with our manner of life … and take the first good opportunity of escaping again into the woods.”Humans are a social species. We long to be part of a community, part of a tribe. Given the option, we’ll always choose it. The modern world isn’t giving us a lot of great choices. So we must create them for ourselves. And the first step toward that is making sure that technology serves our communal needs, rather than replacing them.Seriously, how many of the best moments of your life happened in front of a screen?Join over 320,000 readers.  Get a free weekly update via email  here. This article first appeared on Barking Up The Wrong Tree.

Advanced Sales Closing Strategies

Advanced Sales Closing Strategies Advanced Sales Closing Strategies Advanced sales closes are a bit trickier to apply than the basic or intermediate closes. They require more setup time or a willingness to push the prospect a little harder. But when used wisely, they can seal the deal with prospects who otherwise wouldnt buy from you. Remember, if the prospect is really difficult for you to close, thats a benefit for you in the long term because people who are tough for you to close are also tough for your competitors to sell to! So once you do manage to close a tough cookie customer, they will probably stay with you for quite a while. The Hero Close The hero close is designed for business-to-business sales, although you could develop a variant for consumer sales as well. First, you identify a satisfied customer who also happens to be a successful and well-known member of the business community. When you call to check up with that customer and make sure everything is OK with the product, ask if they would be willing to tell the occasional prospect how good the product is. If they seem to be wavering, assure them you wont ask for their help often- just on rare occasions- and youll always warn them ahead of time when you might want their help. If they agree to help, follow up with a heartfelt thank-you note and possibly a small gift. Then the next time youve got an appointment with a really big prospect, and they state their objection (e.g. the time it will take to learn a new system), say something like: “You know, George Smith, the owner of Parallux, uses this same product. Would you mind if I gave him a call now and we asked him about his experiences with the setup process? I recall he had a similar concern before he started using the product.” Then call Mr. Smith, make a brief introduction, and hand the phone to the prospect. (You know Mr. Smith will be there because you called him right after making the appointment to ask, and gave him the exact time.) If you pick the right “hero” customer, this close will knock your prospects socks off. The Sour-Grapes Close Not for the faint of heart, this close requires perfect delivery or it could backfire on you. But if you pull it off, it will close a sale that is otherwise not going to happen. When your prospect sits through your presentation in grim silence (usually with their arms crossed), its a pretty clear indicator that they arent going to buy the product but dont want to tell you why. Perhaps theyve heard some horror stories about your company or theyre just having a bad day. Persistence on your part will either get you a flat “no” or the infamous “Ill think about it.” Before you hit that point, but after its clear the conversation is headed that way, say something like: “Im afraid Ive made a mistake in coming here today. I apologize for wasting your time, but I dont think this product is right for you.” Then start packing up your things, shake the prospects hand and head out the door. If youve read the person correctly, snatching away the product can jolt them into at least thinking about buying it. If not, you just threw away a sale. Thats why this particular close is not for the inexperienced salesperson!

Learn About Management Levels and Job Titles

Learn About Management Levels and Job Titles Learn About Management Levels and Job Titles People hold management jobs at many different levels in an organization. You may qualify for a management-level job, but you will also benefit from understanding the different management levels to know where you fit within an organization. The duties and responsibilities vary at each of these management levels, and the number of levels depends on the size, culture, industry, and stage of development of the company. Listed below are some of the management levels common in U.S. businesses, in ascending order. Supervisor For many people, their first management level job is as a supervisor. The supervisor is a first-level management job. This individual is responsible for a small group of people, usually doing the same job or very similar jobs. Typically the supervisor has significant experience doing the work of the individuals they supervise. The supervisor usually handles work assignments, timekeeping and problem-solving. He or she is responsible for quality, motivation, and training. The individual at this management level usually has very little discretion or decision-making responsibility, and he or she usually reports to a manager. Project Manager Some people do not consider project management as a management level, and project managers usually do not attend managers’ meetings. However, they perform many of the same functions as other managers. In several industries, this is a common first management job. A project manager does not have direct/line responsibility for the employees assigned to the project. Rather the project manager is a matrix manager. A project manager is responsible for the planning, organizing, directing, and monitoring management functions, but usually in partnership with line managers on the other axis of the matrix. The project manager is responsible for quality, schedule, and budget, but not for the people-related functions like training and discipline. A project manager usually reports to a manager, director, or vice president of project management although they can report to any manager in the hierarchy. Manager A manager may be a first-level manager who supervises employees directly or a second-level manager who manages supervisors. The size of the company usually determines which. The duties and responsibilities of a first-line manager are similar to those of a supervisor although the manager generally has more responsibility for personnel, more HR responsibility, and more discretion. He or she usually supervises a small group of employees doing the same or similar work. The manager usually has a minimum of 1 to 4 years of experience. Managers typically report to senior managers, directors, vice presidents, or owners. Senior Manager Some organizations have positions with the title of Senior Manager. The duties and responsibilities of a senior manager are essentially the same as those of a manager. They are responsible for the administrative and functional direction of a group of employees. They generally have more discretion and greater financial authority than other managers. Often, this title just indicates a person who has been on the job longer than their peers. Sometimes it is because they have the  responsibility to guide or train other managers. On rare occasions, they actually supervise a group of managers. General Manager A general manager supervises more than one function and often supervises all the functions of a company by supervising the managers of those functions. The general manager has wide latitude and a lot of discretionary authority. He or she has considerable financial responsibility and usually has PL responsibility for the company or a large segment of it. The general manager generally is also the hiring authority for the company, although he/she may also delegate that authority to subordinate managers. Other Management Levels Organizations, especially larger ones, have other management levels and titles that dont have the title manager in them.

10 Things That Arent On Your Resume (But Should Be)

10 Things That Aren’t On Your Resume (But Should Be) 10 Things That Aren’t On Your Resume (But Should Be) This post was originally posted on  YouTern. Many young careerists â€" even those with a couple internships under their belt â€" feel as though their resume and LinkedIn profiles are, for lack of a better word… lacking. And sometimes this is true â€" especially when you’re up against someone with three, five and even ten years of at least semi-relevant experience. In that case, how do you compete? You compete â€" and win â€" by including on your resume the achievements, projects and assignments you may have overlooked, or chose not to put on your resume because they were short-term, campus-only related or “not a real job.” Here are nine great examples (and one thing that probably is on your resume, but shouldn’t be): Social Media Savviness No. You aren’t a guru, ninja or an expert. But you do know your way around Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and Pinterest. Your profiles may be the envy of all your friends and colleagues; the number of followers is respectful. Throw in your knowledge of Hootsuite, Tweetdeck, Twitter Chats, LinkedIn Groups, Facebook ads â€" and whatever else you’ve dabbled in so far â€" and you just might impress the social media novice whose organization needs social help, right now. Self-Learning In today’s job market, there isn’t a single employer who doesn’t respect someone who took it upon themselves to learn a skill, or master a software program relevant to their organization. Demonstration of expertise using project management, Photoshop, Salesforce, Infusionsoft, Google Analytics â€" and maybe even a little coding â€" can take your resume from “meh” to “marvelous!” Freelance Projects Remember that project you did for the business near your campus? Or the couple of weeks you spent at that non-profit solving its biggest problem? Those mini-projects weren’t real jobs, no… but they were real experience. List every relevant project you’ve ever taken on. Display the impact you had on the organization you served (quantify!). Show your entrepreneurial spirit! And you’ll catch the attention of a hiring manager looking for someone not afraid to take on a project alone. Theses, Studies and White Papers Did you head up a research project? Write an industry relevant thesis that blew your professor away? Did you lead an on-campus or community-based study? Each of these projects shows attention to detail, problem solving and analytical thinking â€" three skills in high demand by nearly every employer. Again, show the impact of your work; and talk passionately about the mission. Employers don’t only want to know what you did… they want to know why you did it. Content Creation Have you begun blogging? Guest blogging? Have you begun to show your subject matter expertise in a podcast, or a video blog? Maybe a YouTube channel? Have you built a community of followers? All of those things go on your resume! Employers will respect that you are willing to let your thoughts be known, and aren’t afraid to stick your neck out. They’ll get a glimpse of your personality and passion. And â€" if the fit is right â€" they’ll develop a bond with the digital you, well before they call for an interview. Industry Relevant Competitions Speaking of not being afraid to stick your neck out: relevant competitions â€" online, through your community, industry associations, the local chamber of commerce, and your fraternity or sorority â€" are a great way to punch up your resume. Although a bonus (instant credibility), winning isn’t necessary! Just show that you have competed for the third consecutive time at the regional business plan competition, for example, and entrepreneurial minded employers will be impressed. These organizations also make for great networking and keyword elements on your resume. An employer might say, “You were in the Alpha Kappa Psi CASE competitions? So was I!” And, just like that, a relationship has started â€" and an advantage gained. Anything Leadership On-campus clubs, volunteer assignments, part-time retail jobs, heading up a fund-raiser or a committee, campus ambassadorships… anything that shows you were leading from out front must go on your resume. Again, be sure to show your impact; don’t just say you are a lifelong learner, show your impact and talk about what you learned. Conferences Attended That person with the three to five years of experience on their resume… have they attended your industries’ annual convention this year? Last year? Ever? Probably not, but perhaps you did â€" giving you another advantage over the competition. While you were out there listening to Seth Godin, Dan Pink and Matt Cutts, your competition was watching Wheel of Fortune in their pajamas. Who would you hire? Reverse Mentorship All that social media and blogging experience you’ve obtained… ever put it to good use? Ever walk a CEO through a Twitter chat? Or set up a WordPress blog for a solopreneur? Maybe helped get a Mom and Pop shop’s books in order, then show them how to run Quickbooks? Each of these instances of reverse mentorship shows you are willing to give back and teach across generational boundaries â€" a fine, and marketable, skill in today’s workforce. Bonus: Remove THIS from Your Resume When you’re all done with the newest version of resume â€" when you’ve added all your relevant accomplishments â€" you’re going to take one more step guaranteed to help you compete better… Unless you are going into a field where these things still matter (medical, engineering, law, etc.), you are going to get rid of everything that makes you look like a current or recent student. Everything! GPA, relevant coursework, expected graduation dates â€" all of it. Why? Because no one hires students. They hire capable, work-ready young professionals prepared to help them achieve their goals and solve their problems. On your resume and LinkedIn profile: Don’t be a student. How does your resume look now? More professional? More complete? Perhaps less… lacking? Good. Now go compete. CEO and Founder of YouTern, Mark Babbitt is a serial mentor who has been quoted in the Wall Street Journal, Mashable and Forbes regarding job search, career development, internships and higher education’s role in preparing emerging talent for the workforce.
